ROP Center at Farabi Hospital
Farabi Eye Hospital hopes, with the cooperation of its esteemed pediatric and neonatal specialists, to diagnose and treat this potentially progressive and dangerous disease in a timely manner so that we can have more capable children in the future. The Premature Infant Screening Center of Farabi Hospital started working in 1995 in response to the need for retinal screening of these infants. Until 2008, this center was operating as a clinic in the retina department. However, in 2008, due to the increase in the rate of premature births and the need for retinal screening of these infants in the golden period (4 weeks after birth by trained and skilled ophthalmologists) in an environment with the necessary facilities to resuscitate these infants, a suitable and separate space was provided from the retina department with an appropriate interior design. Also, a number of personnel including nurses, public relations and secretaries were trained to work with premature infants and communication conditions were provided through direct telephone, fax and email. Administrative, therapeutic facilities and professional personnel were also established in this center to accept screening and treatment professionally and as an independent unit.
The ROP Center of Farabi Hospital is also ready to accept ophthalmologists for postgraduate training courses in the field of screening, diagnosis and treatment of ROP. These ophthalmologists, after completing the course and passing the final exams, will receive a screening and treatment capability certificate and will be able to work in the ROP system. There are also short-term observation courses for neonatologists and nurses working in the NICU to familiarize them with ROP screening and treatment; After completing the course, they will also receive a certificate and become a member of the ROP team.
The entrance to this clinic is located inside the Farabi Hospital compound and opposite the main entrance to the hospital (door number 3). This clinic is also equipped with a RETcam device for retinal imaging of premature infants. The telemedicine process is also provided in this clinic for remote patients. In this method, the images of the retinas of premature infants are sent by the NICU of other centers to the Farabi Clinic and the specialists of this hospital provide treatment methods online after reviewing the images.
Points about the admission of premature infants to the Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) Clinic at Farabi Hospital:
According to the Ministry of Health standards in the field of premature infant retinopathy service and regarding the examinations of these infants:
* Only premature infants born with a gestational age of less than 34 weeks (33 weeks and 6 days and less) or a birth weight of less than 2001 grams, regardless of whether or not they are hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit, need to be screened for retinopathy of prematurity and are accepted in this clinic by appointment.
* Infants with a gestational age between 34 and 37 weeks or a birth weight of 2001 to 2500 grams are only accepted in this clinic by appointment if they have been examined by a skilled ophthalmologist in the field of ROP outside Farabi Hospital and have a referral letter stating that they need treatment.
* Infants older than 37 weeks or with a birth weight of more than 2500 grams are not at risk of retinopathy of prematurity under any circumstances and there is no need for screening even with a referral letter from a pediatric specialist. If these infants are admitted to the general clinic for any reason, they should only be referred to the consultation clinic for retinal consultation and it is not possible to refer them to the ROP clinic.
Additional Services:

In this method, the images of the retinas of premature infants are sent by the NICU of other centers to the Farabi Clinic and the specialists of this hospital provide treatment methods online after reviewing the images.
* The center also offers postgraduate training courses in the field of screening, diagnosis and treatment of ROP for ophthalmologists.
* There are also short-term observation courses for neonatologists and nurses working in the NICU to familiarize them with ROP screening and treatment.
